Laser Hair Removal 101: Everything You Need To Know For Your First Appointment

Yay! So, you’ve decided to book your first laser hair removal appointment. We’re excited that you’ll soon be on your way to hair-free, carefree, smooth skin. Keep reading for a quick rundown of everything you need to know to be laser-ready!

1. Prep

You’ll want to start prepping a few weeks before your appointment. Here are our Pre Care  Guidelines:

  • Avoid sun exposure 4-6 weeks before and after treatment.

  • Self-tanning skin products should be discontinued 2 weeks before treatment

  • Your provider may ask you to stop topical medications or skin care products 3-5 days before treatment.

  • Avoid bleaching, plucking/tweezing, or waxing hair for 6 weeks before treatment. The melanin-containing hair must be present in the follicle as it is the “target” for the laser light.

  • If you have had a history of cold sores, please pre-treat with an anti-viral.

  • RECENTLY TANNED SKIN CANNOT BE TREATED! If treated within 2 weeks of active (natural sunlight or tanning booth) tanning, you may develop hypopigmentation (white spots) after treatment and this may not clear for 2-3 months or more.

  • Skin must be clean and dry; no lotions, perfumes, make-up, deodorant, self-tanners, etc.

2. Your Appointment

It's time! Wear loose clothing to your appointment. You might want to wear shorts if you’re getting your legs lasered. We’ll give you some fun, funky-looking glasses and get to work. You might feel a quick, snapping sensation, like a rubber band lightly flicking your skin but we promise the discomfort is minimal, and most people find it totally manageable. One of the reasons we love our laser is because of the unique cooling feature it has which makes laser hair removal extremely comfortable.

3. Aftercare

After your appointment, your skin will most likely appear a little red, almost like you have a sunburn. This is normal! You’ll want to avoid shaving or using lotion after your session until the treated area is healed.

4. Repeat Repeat Repeat

Laser hair removal isn’t a one-time appointment. For the best results, you’ll need a series of sessions, spaced 4 - 6 weeks apart. Each appointment gets easier and quicker because you’ll have less hair to target each time!
